This is an introductory course in the basic fundamentals of custom knife making.
Description:
This is an introductory course on the basic fundamentals of custom knife making.
A major emphasis is placed upon the necessity for shop safety.
The class will use common tools found in most shops to create a custom knife with a high carbon steel blade. The handles are to be made out of materials of your choice.
The successful completion of this course will result in a finished and usable knife. This project knife will be designed and hand crafted by the student from scratch.
Learning Outcomes
A complete understanding of when, where and how to use specialized knife shop equipment.
Have a basic understanding of the most popular types of steel used in the custom knife making industry.
Develop an acceptable level of proficiency with shop tools such as belt grinder, vises, files, emery cloth, drill press and bench grinders.
Identify the various types of heat treatment and tempering techniques used by knife makers.
